Does Lorazepam Cause Weight Gain?
People who are experiencing an anxiety disorder will need a medication to help them feel better. Lorazepam is one medication that helps a great many people. It is a tranquilizer that has a positive benefit for those with anxiety conditions.Th
e group of drugs that Lorazepam belongs to is benzodiazepines. There are a
variety of side effects that can be caused by this drug. The list of side
effects can be quite debilitating, but many choose to take the drug because of
the positive effects for their anxiety disorder. You may be experiencing,
clumsiness, dizziness and drowsiness if you are taking this drug. Some of the
more serious side effects are, stomach cramps, changes to your sex drive,
blurred vision, constipation, fatigue, diarrhea, muscle spasms, headaches,
vomiting, nausea, and difficulty urinating. While you are taking this drug you will be advised by your doctor not to drive or operate heavy machinery. Drinking is prohibited while you are taking this drug. It can have other side effects when it is used in combination with other medications so you should make sure you tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking before you begin taking Lorazepam.
One thing that is not mentioned in the side effects is the possibility of weight gain. The reason for gaining weight while taking this drug is usually because of the hunger that you will experience while you are taking it. When you feel the hunger you are more likely to eat and consume more calories than you usually would.
This is the same effect that is experienced by people who are taking a class of drugs called SSRI’s. They are typically used for anxiety and depressive disorders. These other drugs are Lexapro, Celexa, Prozac, Seroril, Zoloft, and Paxil.
The only way to successfully control your weight while you are on one of these drugs is to stop the drug completely. This is not so easy as they are habit forming and may prove to be difficult for the patient to stop. They may experience nervousness and irritability and might attempt to increase their dosage in an effort to relieve their symptoms.
You might also experience confusion, burning sensations, increased sensitivity, an increase to your hearing, loss of a sense of reality, depression, sweating, cramps in the muscles, vomiting, and a sensitivity to light.
This drug is generally only given for a short time because of its addictive nature. The dosage will be reduced once the anxiety symptoms are relieved. The dosage should be reduced slowly until the medication is out of the system in order to eliminate the withdrawal symptoms. If you are suffering from a severe anxiety disorder you may be on the drug for an extensive period of time.
If you are experiencing severe symptoms while taking this drug your doctor may choose to reduce the dosage sooner.
At one time these drugs were thought to help patients lose weight rather than gain, but that has since been disproved. The only way you can successfully lose weight while taking this drug is through watching your diet carefully and getting plenty of exercise.
