Unexplained Weight Gain
An unexplained weight gain happens when there is a weight gain that is not caused by diet or other known causes. When a person gains or loses weight without an explanation of the cause it is necessary to determine what may be happening in the body to explain the weight gain.
Usually a person will gain weight when they consume too much food or calories.
This can happen because they are overeating or the increase in calories may be
caused by a lack of physical exercise. You can overeat when you are emotionally
upset or when you are having certain hormonal changes in your body. This causes
you to have too many calories for the body to effectively burn for its normal
functioning. The body will store the extra calories and use them for later
energy. The stored calories are stored in the form of fat. There are times when excessive caloric intake cannot be blamed for the weight gain. There are some times when a person will gain weight while following the same pattern of eating and activity. The weight gain must be caused by another reason. There may be an illness or a disorder that is happening that you may not be aware of. It can also be caused by changes to your lifestyle that you may not have recognized as contributing to your weight gain.
Aging is a big reason why some people will gain weight. As the body grows older it loses the ability to effectively burn calories. When calories are not burned the body will store them as fat cells for use later when the body needs them. A slowed metabolism is the cause of this lack of effective calorie burn. Some people may lose weight as they age because the appetite is diminished.
Some women have unexplained weight gain can be attributed to a pregnancy that she may not be aware of. Menstruation can also cause some women to gain weight. This weight gain is perfectly normal and in the case of pregnancy it is absolutely necessary.
A tumor could be the cause of an unexplained weight gain. If a tumor is large and is releasing large amounts of serotonin it could explain a weight gain. The tumors that cause this kind of weight gain are usually located in the pancreas, bile duct, intestinal tract, the ovaries or in the lungs.
Some medications can cause a person to experience an unexplained weight gain. Medications like cannabinoids, insulin, corticosteroids, antipsychotics and sulfonylureas can cause a weight gain for those who are taking them. If you believe that your unexplained weight gain is caused by one of these medications you will need to check with your doctor. It is not advisable to stop taking medications abruptly or you may be risking some serious side effects.
If you have also recently quit smoking or made another lifestyle change this could explain your weight gain. Some of these changes to your lifestyle are directly responsible for an increase in the amount of weight you gain.
